This paper presents the instrumentation plans for a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall located along the I-15 reconstruction project in Salt Lake City, Utah. Also presented is the wall behavior obtained from the mentioned instrumentation, which increases our understanding of similar MSE walls. The MSE wall utilizes intermediary and primary welded wire bar mats and welded wire mesh facing elements. The primary bar mats are 24 ft long, and are anchored to the wire mesh facing elements. The intermediate bar mats are 10 ft long, and are also anchored to the wire mesh facing elements. The intermediate reinforcement was installed between layers of primary reinforcement in the lower portion of the wall to control buckling of the wall face. A continuous 30-ft high section of this wall has been instrumented at two locations. One location consists of both intermediate and primary reinforcement, while the second location consists of only primary reinforcement This allows a comparison of the behavior of the two types of designs through examination of the data collected from each portion of the wall.
