High-Resolution Fast-Atom Bombardment Mass Spectrometry (HR-FAB-MS) was used to study the nature of the coke formed in the isomerization of 1-pentene over silicoaluminophosphate catalysts with different pore structure (SAPO-5, SAPO-11 and SAPO-34). The formation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons was obtained in those catalysts with large pore sizes (SAPO-5) whereas in those with medium-small pore sizes (SAPO-34), polyunsaturated long chain hydrocarbons were formed.
