The ICE-High Speed Line of the Deutsche Bahn AG (German Railways) is at present one of the biggest projects of civil engineering in Europe and it represents an investment of 8.0 Mrd. DM (3,9 billion $). Between Cologne and Frankfurt the alignment of 177 km passes a partially densely populated area which is intensively culturally used. Therefore the realization of this structure demands not only mastering civil engineering problems, but also a conflict management in view of other uses of the areas in question, mainly in view of the protection of natural reserves and groundwater resources. In the following civil engineering measures to solve such conflicts are dealt with.
