Every year, Canadian pulp and paper mills generate a large volume of effluent toxicity and chemistry data. Much ofthis data is used primarily for initial assessments of compliance with internal effluent targets or regulations. In manycases, it is then archived and rarely examined again. In the case of UPM-Kymmene Miramichi, the last 10 years ofeffluent data were analyzed and showed trends of increasing final effluent toxicity with increasing loading to theaerated stabilization basin (ASB) and diminishing final effluent quality. Several parameters appear to influencetrout and Daphnia toxicity including TSS, COD and BOD5 loading to the ASB. Historical data were used toestablish effluent guidelines for toxicity prevention that are now being used for better control of mill process effluentand the ASB.
