An overview is given of the current status of experimental methods for the measurement of stored energies in plastically deformed metals. DSC calo-rimetry, electron microscopy and X-ray techniques are compared and their results interpreted from a microscopic point of view. The evolution of recrystallization textures being strongly related to the local stored energies, particular attention is given to the X-ray peak profile analyses capable of describing the dislocation densities in different texture components. The results of orientation dependent stored energies are presented for cold-rolled ultra high purity iron and a hot-deformed Al-2.5%Mg alloy.
