A combination of in-situ annealing and electron backscattered diffraction in the SEM has been used to investigate the effect of solute elements on the grain boundary mobility during the annealing of deformed single crystals of high purity aluminium and of a series of single-phase aluminium alloys. The relationship between boundary velocity and driving pressure was close to linearity in all materials and the activation energies for boundary migration were consistent with control by lattice diffusion of the solutes. The addition of solutes strongly reduced the boundary mobilities which maximized at 40°<111> to the matrix with a broad peak. The experimental results and the solute effects on the grain boundary mobility are discussed in terms of theories of boundary migration.
