This paper describes design principles for building COrbA/Java based collaborative environments to support asynchronous and synchronous interactions between users while working on applications presenting Java graphical user interfaces. The application domain ranges form Tele-Laboratories, Tele-Medicine, to Network Management, e-Commerce and others. Communications to shared objects are intercepted and managed by the environment each participant having the possibility of leading the collaboration. The design follows the decoupling principle at its maximum extent. Java-based applications benefit the most: they do not need any inside interaction with the applications. In one of the applications of the environment described in this students cooperate on building various FPGA based hardware architectures. In another application managers can cooperate through the collaborative environment in managing their network.
