The rapid development of digital, networked multimedia technology such as the Internet, e-mail and computer based and video conferencing can redefine the learning environment. The Internet can provide new opportunities and great potential for education. This paper describes an educational project which involves the use of hypermedia modules inside the distance learning. The experience, named "Cybermath", is an example of distance education using the Internet and the World Wide Web. The aim of this project is to realize an hypermedia course of mathematics with the collaboration between different European universities. It has been developed at the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio (University of Italian Switzerland) a young university born five years ago. This low cost hypermedia solution permits to the students to study at home (asynchronous mode) to prepare the ground state to attend the university mathematics courses; the professors could also build a remedial course using these hypermedia lessons (synchronous mode). The modular structure of this project will permit the addition of the other modules which will render the course flexible for all faculties where the Mathematics is present.
