An Internet Service Provider (ISP) System: Quality of Service Metrics, Hands on Experience with Capacity Planning

ISP Systems that support millions of users pose significant performance challenges. This paper describes an Internet subscriber management system. It details its Quality of Service issues (those should be common to all ISP systems). It then deals with Capacity Planning issues of this system. We present results of measurements, the resources' bottlenecks and the aspects of scaling and tuning. All the results were derived from measurements and analysis made by the author. Many of the tools used were designed and developed by the author, too.
