Digitising of Map Archives in the National Land Survey of Sweden

Digitising of older maps and documents from the archives of the National Land Survey started in the early 1990-ties. Because of an archives strategy founded in 1998 these activities by now have resulted in a decision to go on in a large-scale realisation of digital archives in the organisation. After the digitisation, the original material is to be delivered to the authority responsible for governmental archives, the National Archives of Sweden. The number of deeds or separate maps will exceed 2.5 million. In total, more than 50 million maps and text-pages will be digitised. The digital version will be accessible on Internet for internal and external users. By end of 2001, already 20% or 10 million items will be digitised, and the present plans are to complete the digitisation by 2005.
