A series of 4, 4'-bis(hydroxyalkoxy)-α-methyl stilbenes (HAMS-n), where n is the number of methylene units in alkoxy chains, and n = 2 - 8 and 11, was synthesized. Among them HAMS- 3, 6, and 11, was used as precursor to prepare polyurethane by reacting with 2,4-toluene diisocyanate. Thermotropic properties and mesomorphism of HAMS-n and the polyurethanes were determined using DSC, polarizing optical microscope, wide-angle x-ray diffractometer and miscibility. The thermal properties, mesomorphism and structure relationships were investigated.
