Global structural strength analysis of a semi-submersible requries incident, diffraction and radiation wave-forces on the structure in severe ocean environments. Conventionally, frequency-domain diffraction and motion analysis is used in the design of large floating structures. Several non-linear effects and forces are neglected or approximated in the global strength checks. This is mainly due to the lack of the available technology and customized industrial procedures. Today, modern computers allow us to use a fully non-linear time-domain program in the design of large floating structures. Several simplification and approximation errors can thus be avoided in the design.
