A new method for determining the ancient firing temperatures of ceramics was developed. The basis of the new method is the change of the water absorption at refiring (rfwa method: refiring water absorption). The method was developed by using self-made ceramics. The firing temperatures of several shards from the middle ages (Eberswalde, Brandenburg) and Roman period (Eifel area) were measured and controlled with X-ray phase analysis.
