A semi-empirical extrusion model has been applied to the 5000-ton indirect extrusion press at Corus Aluminium Extrusions with the aim of ascertaining to what extent such a model can be applied to production on this large press. Very encouraging results, with correlation coefficients up to R~2-0.96, have been obtained. Considerable room for improvement still exists by changing some of the parameter definitions and by improved measurement accuracy. The effect of multiple-hole extrusion on the pressure was investigated. At the same extrusion ratio no significant pressure difference between one-hole, five-hole and 12-hole extrusion was found.
