A series of single crystal nickel-based superalloys containing additions of rhemium and ruthenium were designed with the aid of time-saving formulate allowing to predict some of their physical characteristics. This alloy design programme succeeded in identifying the new generatiion single crystal alloy MC-NC suited for gas turbine blade and vane applications. This alloy exhibited a density-corrected high temperature creep strength comparable to that of high-rhemium containg alloys, but with a lower density and no propensity to form deleterious TCP phases.
