ITS INTEGRATION THROUGH A COMMONDATABASE

The UK Urban Traffic Management and Control programme has researched the use ofa common database to achieve integration of heterogeneous traffic systems. CORBAinterfaces and a standard data model give interoperability and encourage portability.The common database interfaces provide applications with simple yet powerful dataaccess services. On-street trials in Leicester and in Glasgow have demonstratedworking integrated systems. Two kinds of integration were achieved: sharing of databetween previously unconnected applications to yield new functionality, and thecreation of an open interface to replace an existing closed proprietary link, enablingpublic access to the common data for analysis or other applications.
