THE NEW TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT CENTRE INSTOCKHOLM - A JOINT PROJECT FOR THE CITYAND THE NATIONAL ROADS

As in most big cities, the Stockholm metropolitan area suffers from excess of demand fromroad and street traffic. That creates problems for the environment, for general safety and formobility efficiency. There is a need for an efficient distribution of traffic in the road network.However, part of the road network is a responsibility for the City, and part of the roadnetwork is a responsibility for the Swedish National Road Administration (SNRA). The Cityof Stockholm is a municipality, an entity which is independent of the Swedish nationalgovernment. The SNRA is an administration under the government.An agreement has been signed between the City of Stockholm and the Swedish NationalRoad Administration for establishing a joint traffic management centre, covering all nationalroads and all the City main streets in the Stockholm region. That means that the centre willcover both motorways and business streets with traffic signal systems. Other municipalitieswill join the centre, as well as the public transport authority and the traffic police.This paper will give the background and also describe the centre.
