The design of a novel tubular micro-SOFC demonstration system is described which incorporates three sections, namely a pre-reformer, a micro tubular SOFC stack of 12 cells per stack layer, and a catalytic combustion section. A three-layer stack was constructed which included a chimney system for utilisation of the exhaust heat for fuel and air pre-heating and co-generation of heat. The micro-tubular SOFC cells utilised the 8mol% stabilised zirconia electrolyte supported type with dimensions of 2.4mm O and 200 urn wall thickness, previously described. The paper also describes the fabrication of the micro-tubular SOFCs including improved Ni/YSZ anode layers and the electrical performance of cells using hydrogen, methane and butane fuels.
