Substitution potentials of solar-photovoltaic power systems in nigeria

The electric Power System in Nigeria is characterized by frequent outages leading to low system reliability. This has a major impact on the social, economic and industrial development of the country and is retarding investment. Expansion in the generating capacity and the extension of the transmission system to the rural communities is a major concern to the government and several sectors of the economy. Efforts being made to improve system reliability and to extend the transmission line to the remote parts of the country face constraints from the large land mass of the country and availability of funds. There is the need to incorporate Stand-alone Photovoltaic systems into the nations energy mix to provide electricity to the rural areas where grid and conventaic Systems to meet the electric power requirements, particularly in the remote locations of the country is assessed. This assessment has been carried out for different sectors of the Nigerian economy.
