Supercritical carbon dioxide and fluorinated refrigerants, such as 1, 1-difluoroethane and 1, 1, 1, 2-tetrafluoroethane, are environmentally friendly solvents for use in polymer processing operations, including recycling of thermoplastic polymers and polymer composites and replacement of ozone-depleting, physical blowing agents in manufacturing of foamed plastics. Data and accurate predictions of the gas solubility, phase behavior and rheological behavior of specific polymer-supercritical systems are needed to demonstrate the feasibility of these applications.
