Measurements of computer performance are used for a variety of purposes including cost analysis, software development, operations support and performance management. Each of these applications has its own measurement requirements, and each benefits from measurements originally collected for other purposes. This paper examines the origins of performance measurement, the structure of measurement data, and the interrelationships among the applications that utilize performance measurement data.
