To observe the effect of combined irradiation with mollimeter microwaves and gamma-rays on MDA, GSH contents and SOD activities in certain organs of mice in order to investigate the mechanisms of biological effects of the above two different electromagnetic waves. Methods: Millimeter microwave with a frequency of 36.11 GHz and a power density of 10 mW centre dot cm~-2 was applied to both the lumbodorsal parts of normal mice and th emice previously irradiated with 60~Ci gamma-rays. The contents of MDA, GSH and th eactivities of SOD in the heart, brain, lungs, liver, spleen and small intestinesof all the mice were measureed 8 day after the irradiation. Results: (1) Local irradiation with millimeter microwaves coud increase the contents of MDA in the brain, liver, lungs and intestines and millimeter microwave irradiation following gamma-ray irradiation could cause come changes i nthe content of MDA in the tissues. (2) Irradiation with either millimeter microwaves or gamma-rays could decrease the content of GSH in the heart and millimeter mimrowave irradiation could increase the HSH level in the liver. Millimeter microwave irradiation following gamma-ray irradiation could restore the GSH levels of the related tissues. (3) Irradiation with either millimeter microwaves or gamma-rays could increase the activities of SOD in the liver and small intestines. Conclusion: Both millimeter microwave and gamma-ray could cause some changes in free radicals and the contents of their products, thus producing biological effects. The combined irradiation of millimenter microwave and gamma-ray could, to some extent, repair the damage.
