Inductively coupled plasma-optically emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) has been used to determine the minor and trace elements in iron and steel. However, due to the line-rich Fe matrix and the insufficient detection limits of some trace elements, the analytes are generally preconcentrated and removed from the matrix prior to their determinations. In this work, an optimized axially viewed ICP was used to improve the detection limits of As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, P, Pb, Ti, Sb and Sn in steel and iron and to eliminate the Fe matrix effect. In addition, the multicomponent spectral fitting (MSF) method was applied to correct the spectral interferences. Satisfactory results were obtained.
