Crime and punishment in cyberspace:dealing with law enforcement and the courts

As the cyber world becomes more connected,incidents of abuse continue to rise.While most incidents are relatively minor -- spamming,hoaxes,account sharing,etc.-- we have encountered a growth in incidents that require legal action.At the University at Buffalo,the Computer Discipline Officer and University Police have collaborated directly in investigating the following types of incidences:harassment,denial of service attacks,soliciting obscene materials from a minor,child pornography,and hacking.Most IT staff involved in dealing with policy enforcement have little experience in dealing properly and efficiently with law enforcement,and the courts.Most law enforcement officers have little experience with investigating computer crime.This paper will provide some practical advice based on the experiences and interactions of the co-arthors.
