A perturbation method in particular, the method of multiple scales has been applied in power system to find the normal form near the Hopf bifurcation point. The studies show that the three bus power system is experiencing two Hopf bifurcation points. In this paper, the method of multiple scales used to find the nature of these Hopf bifurcation points. To find out if the point is a subcritical or a supercritical. The normal form near these Hopf bifurcation points is found. One of the Hopf bifurcation point is found to be a subcritical Hopf bifurcation and the other is found to be a supercritical point.
