Sustainable remediation of land contamination

The wider environmental effect of remediating land contamination is an important component of any decision about how to bring land back into beneficial use. In the UK, the Environment Agency is devleoping guidance to assist those selecting different remedial options to include wider environmental consequences in their risk management decisions. The devleoping framework will be based around a tiered approach moving from the initial identification of potential environmental effects through to a qualitative and/or quantitative appraisal of the relative differences between two or more remedial options. This paper describes the interim findings of this work and discusses the definition of the evaluation criteria and their operational boundwaries within the context of the framework.
