Introduction: The Science of Sensors as the Science of Artificial Perception?

The science of sensors is currently undergoing major changes. So far research has been mainly orientated towards technology. Major conferences and journals in the field call for contributions about new materials and innovative processing methods, devices (mechanical, chemical, optical, acoustic, thermal, magnetic, radiation and so on) and design (micro-systems, electronic interfaces, reliability and testability, simulation). Besides this traditional current of developments, realized in the academic and industrial environments, there exist many ferments that we intend to reveal paying attention to the theme of artificial and natural perception presented under various angles.
