Natural product synthesis is at the very core of organic chemistry. This is the picture that can be deduced browsing through the hundreds of references reporting the total syntheses of natural products that were reviewed for the preparation of this survey. Many of these works exemplify the skill, creativity, craftmanship, and intellect, often tinctured with perseverance and good fortune, that is the foundation of any synthetic enterprise. Solutions to problems of this scope often carry with them learning opportunities which trascend the confines of the particular problem under inquiry.
