Road authorities in Switzerland are facing growing numbers of passage requests for special transports, i.e. foroversized, overweight vehicles along specific route. These requests have to be processed quickly and accurately. In particular the effect of overweight vehicles on bridges must be accurately assessed. A software program, TRUCK, assists authorities in this task. It is based on a comparison of internal forces (bending moments and shear forces) under design-code loads and loads induced by special transport. For this purpose the bridge structure is numerically simplified into a sequence of simply supported beams. By virtue of this simplification the application TRUCK is both fast and easy to use.
