Retention behavior of several salts on a novel amphoteric ion exchange resin has been studied. The resin has a quaternary ammonium group and a carboxylic acid group in one functional part. The resin was used as stationary phase and water was used as mobile phase. Retention of each salt increased with the increase of the amount of the functional group on the rrsin, and each salt showed different selectivity of the resin was similar to the complex stability of the acetic acid. For anion species, the resin had higher selectivity to monovalent anion than divalent anion, The retention varied with the salt concentration of loaded solution. All salts examined showed maximal retention at around 0.01 M salts concentration. Separation of chloride ion and sulfate ion was examined, and it was shown that the resin has been successfully applied to sulfate removal from brine. The resin can be applied for the separation of various electrolytes, and also for the separation of electrolytes and non-electrolytes.
