摘要

The vast majority of bridges are functionally focused and do not involve significant envelope considerations. However, a subset of bridges exists that do have envelope systems and require more consideration. The three bridges illustrated here are in a smaller subset that have a significant masonry component and have historical designation. These types of bridges are common in the eastern United States, and as more of them are slated for repair, rehabilitation, or replacement, new techniques will need to be employed to prevent the repaired bridges from suffering the same deterioration as the original bridges. Some of these techniques, such as cavity wall construction, can be adapted from other industries where they have been tested and installed for many years. Others will involve new ways of constructing materials to minimize or postpone future deterioration.
