Saving the Bodie Island Lighthouse: Preservation and rehabilitation challenges in a 140-year old coastal structure

Located on Oregon Inlet on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, near the town of Nags Head, is the Bodie Island Light Station, a collection of buildings constructed circa 1872 to serve as an aid to navigation along the dangerous section of the Atlantic coastline known as "The Graveyard of the Atlantic." Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Light Station today consists of the historic Lighthouse, Oil House, Light Keeper's Quarters, storage buildings, brick walkways, and a modern Visitor Comfort Station. The Light Station is within the environs of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which is maintained by the National Park Service.
