Distal radius fractures account for approximately one-sixth of all fractures. Tratment alternatives for unstable fractures include external fixation, rigid internal fixation, bone grafting, and pin fixation. Pinning is the least invasive technique and it theoretically produces less stress shielding which may aid fracture healing. However, the stability of pin fixation is substantially influenced by the fracture pattern and pining configuration. Thus, both fracture stabilization and bone stresses should be considered in evaluating fixation techniques.
