A 10 to 20 year industry supported long-term receivign water Study has been initiated. The study, involving three different U.S.receiving waters includes two rivers in Oregon and an additional stuyd site in pennsylvania. These locations represent both warm and coldwater stream types as well as streams ranging from those that are effluent dominated to those that are more typical of industry receiving waters. Mill process types represented in the LTRWS include both bleached and unbleached kraft with an opportunity to ocmplete before/after process change comparisons for the bleached mills, which will be undergoing"cluster rule" process changes.. This paper will describe the process used in seectingthe LTRWS locations including input from industry representatives and the establishment of criteria for establishing and prioritizing industry information needs. A detailed description is provided for each of the selected LTRWS locations, includinga description ofthe mill, effluent treatment and discharge conditions. Stuyd location information includes a description of monitoring sites selected for water quality, periphyton, macroinvertebrate,and fish as well as a summary of past water quality and biological montoring which has taken place on each river. A brief description of the development and implementation of the experimental design for abiotic and biotic monitoring is also provided.
