For the production of environmentally friendly gasoline, the oxygenates such as MTBE and TAME play a very important role. However, these components will cause a higher cost of reformulated gasoline due to the iso-olefin resource and etherification process. This paper describes an improved FCC process called MIO (Maximum Iso Olefin) which can provide three times the amount of isobutylene and isoamylene than conventional FCC and has been successful commercialized since 1995. For etherification of iso-olefins, a novel process is being developed based on solid acid catalyst instead of resin which enables regeneration, reduces pollution and lowers the cost. The yield of isobutylene and isoamylene can reach 4.82% and 5.36% of fresh feed respectively and that of MTBE and TAME 7.5% and 7.7% respectively. The total ethers account for 15% of FCC gasoline. Meanwhile, the gasoline of the MIO process shows a higher Octane Number of RON 93.6 and MON 80.5.
