Fiber Optic Sensors for Marine Composite Applications

Fiber optic sensor technology is rapidly maturing. Laboratory development of a wide variety or fiber optic sensors is rapidly being transferred to field applications, mainly in the aerospace industry and infrastructure monitoring. Fiber optic sensor technology is particularly attractive for use in marine composites. Small size and material compatibility make these sensors ideal for embedment during lay-up or filament winding. Major obstacles to the development of these applications include the need for a new line of miniature, robust connector hardware, and evaluation of the long-term performance of fiber optic sensors embedded in marine composites.
