Although approaches of analysing isolated members are useful for providing an insight into the behaviour of individual members, they are inadequate for analysing the interactions between elements. Also in the analysis of individual elements, it is assumed that blast load transferred from the element to the support structure is safely resisted by the support structure. In a deck system that consists of deck plate, secondary beams and main plate girders, failure in any part may occur, but the consequences can be different. Thus a systematic approach considering different degrees of vulnerability of each structural component under blast loading is preferred, so that the most vulnerable part can then be identified and appropriate precautions can be taken. Presented in this paper is the blast response of a generic deck system which is based on a typical existing platform. An explicit finite element program DYNA3D is adopted to analyse the response. The systematic approach considers the deflection of the panel, the deformed shape, membrane and shear forces transferred to the support structure in the load transfer path, failure mode and failure location. With the peak overpressure ranging from 0.5 bar to 2 bar, the vulnerability of plate girders due to local buckling in the web at support positions is of particular concern in this preliminary study.
