The paper discusses the manner in which computational intelligence (CI) and complementary computer-aided design and analysis processes could be integrated within an overall information technology framework supporting knowledge-rich civil engineering environments. Problems related to this are explored and possible ways forward to ensure that significant potentials can be realised are discussed. The paper concludes that there is a requirement for the integration of wide-ranging skills and cooperative working to avoid research fragmentation. There is also a need to develop user-centric systems that enhance designer skills and support a more holistic approach. The integration of CI with a range of complementary enabling advanced computing technologies is essential. Educational requirements to ensure that a subset of graduating civil engineers are sufficiently computer-literate to manage and best utilise the resulting systems will also need to be satisfied. The paper's overall conclusion is that a shift of research emphasis from application to integration is essential
