Emergency shutdown (ESD) systems and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) are used in the process industry to perform safety functions by taking the process via a pre-determined way into a safe state. Complete systems nowadays consist of sensors, (computer) logic and actuators. Many parameters can influence the safety of these systems like system layout, diagnostics, common cause effects, proof testing and repair.
