Glass-reinforced hydroxyapatite (GR-HA) composites have been developed in order to improve the mechanical properties of HA for use in orthopedic and dental surgery. However, the precise biological effects of these implant materials on host cells are not yet known. In this study we found, using flow cytometry (FCM), that GR-HA caused a decrease in the size of osteoblast-like MG63 cells and also resulted in a low level of inhibition of cell growth, possibly by delaying the progression of the cells from the G0/G1 into the S phase of the cell cycle.
