Seismic hazard estimation in the central Tell Atlas of Algeria(Algiers-Kabylia)

The aim of this work is to determine the peak ground acceleration in hard rock, insome sites in the Algiers-Kabylia region. The widely used probabilistic seismic hazard approach isutilised. A seismic source model for Algiers-Kabylia area is established on the basis of the most recentseismotectonics results obtained in the tell region. Seismic sources are then characterised byassessing their seismotectonical and geometrical characteristics (length, dip, maximum magnitudeand slip rate).The recently compiled and homogenised catalogues of the seismicity of Algeria areused to determine the source parameters such as b-value and N(m0) for each seismic source. Attenuationof ground motion is considered by developing a new law for the study region which iscompared to the usually used world-wide laws such as Ambraseys and Bommer, 1991 and Sadighand al., 1993. The obtained results indicate relatively high hazard for the studied sites. Indeed , theacceleration value for a return period of 500 years exceed 0.4 g.
