Experience in the application of Eurocode 8 to seismic analysis and design of buildings and bridges

In recent years, the research group at the University of Ljubljana has used the Eurocode8 (EC8) for analysis and design of several test building and bridge structures. In the paper themost important results for three building and two bridge structures are summarized. In all cases,comparative studies were made. The studies include, depending on the structure, comparisons withthe existing code in Slovenia and with US provisions, comparisons of different methods of analysis,of different design intensities and of different design ductilities. Based on the test examples, aconclusion can be drawn that EC8 provides a capable environment for seismic design. However,some of the deficiencies of the EC8 have been identified. Some suggestions for the improvementsare given.
