Using peel-plies for structural adhesive bonding of aircraft structures - a reliable method for reproducible, but contaminated surfaces
Peel-plies are commonly used for the fabrication of structures made of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP). A peel ply is an additional layer on top of the laminate that is used to absorb surplus resin during manufacturing. The additional outer layer protects the surface during transportation, non-destructive testing and handling. By peel ply removal a new surface can be created immediately for adhesive bonding. In theory, the peel ply removal results in a new and uncontaminated fracture surface that is activated by polymer chain scission. The peel ply method is often presented as a viable surface treatment for structural bonding.
