We present a method of simple control over anisotropy in bio-inspired dry adhesives simply by adding a small defect to the caps using lithographic techniques. Because this method can be completed on a cap before the production of the rest of the fiber, it represents a significant improvement in the ease of manufacturing and produces significant normal adhesion strength even in the absence of shear loads, unlike many other directional dry adhesives.
