This technical paper discusses innovative geotechical design and construction issues related to the landfilling of approximately 100 feet of municipal solid waste (MSW) atop 80 to 100 fett fo very soft, weak, and compressible dredge spoils and underlying native fine-grained foundation soils. The dredge spoils were obtained from dredging bottom sediments from two adjacent intersecting revers, The dredge spoils were retained within an earthen bernm that surrounds the 120-acre site immediately adjacent to the confluence of the rivers. OBvious geotechnical issues related to the compressibility and shear strength/bearing capacity of these materials, as well as the potential for slope instability of the earthen perimenter berm, required detailed evaluation as part of the final design and constructin of the landfill and its lining and leachate collection system. This paper will discuss these issues.
