The compressive load at which an artificial delamination will propagate, or "spread", is examined with respect to its dependence upon the thickness of the release film used in its creation. It is found that, counter-intuitively, the spreading load increases with increasing film thickness. An explanation is given in terms of delamination toughness, the indication being that the "real" delamination will tend to propagate at lower loads than an artififical one created by the usual release-film method. This represents a non-conservative situation.
