It has been quite difficult to apply monolithic refractories to the slag line of steel teeming ladle which operate under severe conditions because of poor corrosion resistance. Basic castable refractories such as MgO and CaO are known to be effective, although poor hydration resistance of the basic materials prevented them from actual service. Recently, since MgO-CaO clinkers with superior hydration resistance have been developed, the basic castable can be utilized for the slag line. We reports the use of the MgO-CaO based castable for the slag line and the improvement of the castable by adding fine Al_2O_3. Al_2O_3 addition imparts good corrosion and slag penetration resistance as well as good spalling resistance. This castable is being used at Nagoya Works.
