Aryl phosphine oxide and/or sulfone containing aromatic poly(thioether ketone) homo- and random compolymers have been prepared via a new simplified method based on a new dithio A-A monomer and characterized. The polymerization reactions were conducted at 160 deg C in an N,N-dimethylacetamide, using toluene as the azeotroping agent and anhydrous potassium carbonate as the base. In general, tough and high molecular weight thermoplastic materials have been produced that are amorphous and exhibit a linear increase in the glass transition temperature with increasing sulfone or phosphine oxide content. Incorporation of aryl phosphine oxide moieties on the backbone of polymers reuslts in enhanced solubility in common organic solvents and produced a significant char yield upon tGA degradation in an air atmosphere.
