Abstract: The nature of surface optical breakdown is generally related to the presence of pre-existing and laser-induced defects. Techniques and devices of near-field optical microscopy (NFOM) are proposed to be used to identify the defects and investigate their evolution under action of high-power laser fields. NFOM provide detailed high-resolved information about local surface optical properties and surface microstructure as well as about space distribution of laser fields at the surface. General principles of NFOM and some ways to apply it to investigation of surface optical damage of transparent materials are considered in this paper. !55
