摘要

A knowledge based system that supports professionals in the tasks they commonly perform with established procedures (e.g., those found in manuals for hte design of structures) is presented. The system provides professionals with an environment in which they can learn and consult the steps of procedures, and solve problems using those procedures. It achieves its multi-functionality by using a single knowledge representation scheme that facilitates the tutoring, problem solving and consulting tasks, the representation of a user's model and the automatic generation of examples and evaluation problems. Based on the user model, the system tailors its explanations to a user's understanding of the domain.
